Butler Strike Pushes Monks Past Blue Jays in OT, 2-1

STANDISH, Maine – Sophomore Hannah Butler (Melrose, Mass.) scored off a Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) pass in the 99th minute to lift Saint Joseph's College (6-4-1, 3-3-1 GNAC) past University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (6-3-1, 4-2-0 GNAC), 2-1 in overtime, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, both teams hit pay dirt early in the second stanza, as Monks freshman Kenzie Murphy (West Baldwin, Maine) scored off a DaGraca feed at the 47:15 mark and Blue Jays senior Jessica Spezzano (Watertown, Conn.) found the back of the net in the 53rd minute on a free kick attempt from about 25 yards out.

For Butler, the goal was her first of the season and second game-clincher of her career.

Monks senior Brook Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) posted six saves to earn the victory while Blue Jays freshman Megan Ricci (Center Moriches, N.Y.) tallied 11 stops in a hard fought loss. Junior Deidra Caruso (Portland, Conn.) also recorded a crucial defensive save on a DaGraca header in the 11th minute.

Saint Joseph's posted advantages in shots (27-13) and shots on goal (14-7) while both teams were awarded three corner kicks in the conference contest.

With the triumph, Saint Joseph's improves to 6-3-3 in the history of the series with University of Saint Joseph (Conn.). The Monks and Blue Jays dueled to a 2-2 tie last fall.

Saint Joseph's plays at Mount Ida College Wednesday in a GNAC tilt slated to start at 4:00 PM.
