Monks Open Season with 3-0 Win Over Fighting Scots

WENHAM, Mass. - #25 Saint Joseph's College (1-0) kicked off the 2018 season with a 3-0 victory over Gordon College on Friday evening.

The Monks struck early as senior forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored off a Cody Elliott (Gorham, Maine) corner kick just three minutes and 16 seconds after the opening whistle. Senior forward Jesse Ramirez (Dumont, N.J.) and freshman forward Kudi Onyejose (East Greenwich, R.I.) tacked on late goals in the 71st and 88th minutes, respectively, to account for the 3-0 final.

Senior Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) turned away the only shot he faced to earn his first shutout of the season and 29th of his career. In 52 college games, he is now 40-5-7.

Gordon netminder Wesley Sprague was busy in the loss with eight saves on the evening.

Saint Joseph's held a commanding 21-1 shots advantage while the Fighting Scots notched a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 1-1 in the history of the series with Gordon College, a team the Monks had not faced since the 1994 campaign prior to tonight's action.

The triumph extends the Monks' program-record undefeated streak to 22 games.
