WORCESTER, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (6-5) defeated MIT (4-4), 9-4, in a non-conference baseball contest at Granger Turf Field on the campus of Clark University on Sunday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, when sophomore third baseman Will Martin (Arlington, Mass.) doubled home sophomore Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) and scored on a single off the bat of freshman second baseman Luke Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.).
The Engineers scored single runs in the second and third innings to knot the contest at 2-2, but Saint Joseph's broke the game open with three runs off two hits an error in the top of the fifth. Junior shortstop Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) singled and later scored on a throwing error, junior right fielder Anthony DiPrizio (Rochester, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Noah McDaniel (Eliot, Maine) sacrifice fly, and Johnson worked a bases-loaded walk to lift the Monks to a 5-2 advantage.
Both teams plated a pair of runs in the seventh, when senior catcher Jacob White (Salem, N.H.) singled and scored on a Hunter Richardson (North Monmouth, Maine) groundout and Johnson delivered a run on a first and third bunt play.
Leading 7-4 in the top of the eighth, St. Joe's tacked on a pair of insurance runs off three hits, as White sent Murphy home with a single through the right side and McDaniel plated Gravel with a single to left.
ON THE MOUND:
Saint Joseph's freshman starter Zach Begin (Georgetown, Mass.) allowed two runs (one earned) off five hits and four walks with six strikeouts over 4.2 innings and senior Travis Godbout (Portland, Maine) picked up the win after allowing two runs off two hits and two walks with one strikeout on 2.1 innings and senior southpaw Josh Partridge (Deerfield, N.H.) closed out the contest with three K's and one hit allowed over two frames.
MIT starter Casey Bussone took the loss after yielding five runs (two earned) off six hits and two walks with a pair of punch outs in 4.1 innings. Zach Michaud walked a pair of batters in 1/3 inning, Nick Charchut allowed four runs (two earned) off three hits and a walk with four K's over three frames, and Jared Tramontano gave up two hits and fanned a pair in 1.1 innings of relief.
OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Murphy was 3-6 with two runs and a pair of stolen bases
- Johnson went 2-2 with a pair of walks and three RBI
- White added two hits, a run, a stolen base, and an RBI in three at bats
- Gravel doubled and was 2-5 with three runs scored
- Martin was 1-2 with a run, a double, and an RBI
OFF THE BAT – MIT:
- Center fielder Garrett Greenwood was 4-5 with two runs, two steals, and a pair of doubles
- Designated hitter Thomas Allison went 2-5 with a double, a triple, and three RBI
- Third baseman Jared Schwait was 2-4 with an RBI
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 3-4 in the history of the series with MIT. The Monks defeated the Engineers by a 15-5 margin in Standish last spring.
Saint Joseph's will play at Husson University on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
