WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT - The Saint Joseph's College Women's Swimming team placed 20th with 43 points in the 2010 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships over the weekend. The women broke five team records and advanced to the finals in seven events.
Keene State University won the regional event for the third straight year with 924 points, with Bentley University finishing as the runner-up with 802 points. The 10-member Keene State women's team won all five relays races, 12 of 18 individual events, set four school records and established two meet marks on Sunday. 22 New England institutions participated in the event overall.
Hannah Gajewski '12 (Biddeford, ME) paced the Monks with 27 individual points and participated in the final round in three different events, and placed eighth in two of those competitions with record-setting times for St. Joe's. Gajewski placed eighth in the 100-IM (1:06.26) and 200-IM (2:22.78) events and finished 18th in the 200-Free (2:09.19). She also swam a leg for the SJC 400-Free relay team, which placed 18th with a new program-record time of 3:59.03.
Ashton Piers '10 (Falmouth, ME/Deering) and Jamie Wojtkiewicz '12 (Bedford, NH) also advanced to the finals in the 50-Breast (37.26) and 200-IM (2:29.50) competitions, respectively. Both swimmers, along with Rose Maccarrone '12 (Hingham, MA) and Christine Cote '13 (Biddeford, ME), participated as members of the 200-Free relay team, which advanced to the finals and posted a 1:51.07 effort, which was good for a 17th place finish.
Maccarrone, Cote, Gajewski and Wojtkiewicz all swam legs for the 400-Free relay team, which set a new team record with a 3:59.03 performance.
Cote and Wojtkiewicz notched new team records during the preliminary rounds, as Cote swam the 50-free in 27.70 on Friday and Wojtkiewicz posted a 5:22.01 time in the 400-IM on Saturday.
The NEISDA meet closes out the season for the SJC swimmers, who notched a 5-2 record in head-to-head competitions and placed third in the GNAC Championship meet under second-year Head Coach Rick Horr.
