St. Joe’s Swimmers Collect Weekly Conference Awards

STANDISH, ME - The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has released its weekly awards for the reporting period ending February 8th, and two Saint Joseph's College swimmers have been honored. Lindsay D'Ascanio ‘11 (Kennebunk, ME) is the GNAC Women's Co-Swimmer of the Week and Hannah Gajewski ‘12 (Biddeford, ME/McAuley) has been named as the Rookie Swimmer of the Week.

D'Ascanio and Gajewski receive the weekly honors after their performance in the first swim meet ever hosted by Saint Joseph's in the Harold Alfond Center. St. Joe's toppled Husson University, 170-84, in the historic event on February 7th.

For D'Ascanio, the 2008 GNAC Rookie Swimmer of the Year, the weekly award is her second of the season. Against Husson on February 7th, she posted victories in the 50-Back (32.12), 100-Back (1:09.29) and 50-Fly (30.88) and swam a leg for the winning 200-Medley relay team. D'Ascanio's time in the 50-Back on Saturday set a new program record.

Gajewski earned first-place finishes in the 200-IM (2:24.89), 100-Breast (1:17.07) and 100-IM events and swam a leg for the winning 200-Free (1:57.17) relay squad in the meet against Husson on Saturday. The freshman bested her own program record in the 200-IM and currently owns nine program records. The rookie award for Gajewski is her sixth of the season.

The women will next compete in the New England Championship, which is hosted by U-Mass Dartmouth on February 20-22. The men will take to the pool in the Men's New England Championship, hosted by Roger Williams (RI) February 27-March 1.
