Directors
The Maine Soccer School directors have a genuine enthusiasm, knowledge, and love for the game of soccer. These "hands on" directors not only take on a full coaching load all week, but also can be found before and after each session working on individual skills with camp attendees.
Jim Evans
Head Coach, Hendrix University, Conway, Arkansas
Jim Evans currently is the head women's soccer coach at Hendrix
University in Conway, Arkansas
Prior to this position, Jim Evans spent two years as the girl's
coach at Simsbury High school in Simsbury, Ct, and prior to that
was the men's soccer head coach at the University of Hartford for
13 years.
Evans' 19-year career as a head coach is marked with success. He
has posted an overall record of 171-153-37. During his tenure,
Evans led the Hawks to the America East Championship and an NCAA
Tournament appearance while being named America East Coach of the
Year. Prior to joining the Hawks, he led Thomas College to three
NAIA New England Championship finals ('88, '89, '90), winning the
title in 1988. Evans also served as the school's athletics director
from 1991 until his departure.
He played his collegiate soccer at the University of Connecticut,
where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1976.
A team captain at UConn, he was a two-time All New England forward
(1975, 1976) and helped lead the Huskies to the NCAA quarterfinals
in 1974 and 1976.
Evans has been involved with the Connecticut Olympic Development
program as a coach and regional evaluator. In 1979, together with
his wife, Irma, and four others, he founded the Connecticut Women's
Soccer League (CWSL). He has also played and coached for various
club teams in Connecticut. An avid reader, he has started "Read and
Play Everyday," a program in which he and his players read and
teach soccer to area schoolchildren.
Evans holds a U.S. Soccer Federation coaching license, an NSCAA
Advanced National Diploma and a Dutch coaching license. He is
also a member of the University of Connecticut Hall of Fame as well
as a member of the Thomas College Hall of Fame. A well
respected and accomplished referee, he has worked several
high-level men's league games in the area. The highlight of his
career as a referee came when he had the opportunity to work a U.S.
national team match.
Michael
Bolanz
Head Coach Women's Soccer, Saint Joseph's
College, Standish, Maine
Coach Michael Bolanz is the head soccer coach of the women's team
at Saint Joseph's College. This past season was his fifth season
with the women's team. Mike is a 2000 graduate of Saint
Joseph's College. In his four years playing
goalkeeper for the Monks, he was named to
three All-Conference first teams, two All-Region and
All-State Teams and received an All-American nomination.
In 2004, Coach Bolanz took over the head coaching position
of the Saint Joseph's College women's soccer program,
after having served as an assistant for a year under former head
coach Todd Sniper. Bolanz led his team to an impressive 11-7-1
record and a New England Cup Championship. The
team's turnaround was ranked among the top 20 for NCAA
Division III teams. For his efforts, and in only his first year as
a head coach, Bolanz was named the Association of Division III
Independents Coach of the Year. Since then Coach Bolanz has
won a second Coach of the Year award and has amassed a record of
63-29-5 with the Women's program
Coach Bolanz is a nationally-licensed soccer coach. In
addition to coaching the Monks, Bolanz coaches a u-13
Odyssey Sport premier girls team, where he is also the Director of
Coaching for the club. He recently was inducted into the
Saint Joseph's College Hall of Fame as the first men's soccer
player ever to be inducted.
Bill
Swartz
Head Coach, Men's Soccer, Ponoma-Pitzer College, Claremont,
California
Coach Bill Swartz has been the men's soccer coach since 1986. He
joined Pomona-Pitzer
College after coaching at Thomas College, where he was named
the New England Coach of the Year in 1985. He was also named the
Far West Coach of the Year in 1990. Swartz has served as the
Mid-West and Far-West Region Soccer Chair and is currently the
SCIAC men's soccer chair.
During the winter of 1994, Bill Swartz became the first native born American to successfully coach in the English Professional League. While working for the Watford Football Club, Bill's responsibilities included coaching and game analysis for the youth (16-18 year old) and reserve teams (full professionals). Currently, Bill is coaching the LA Galaxy Under 18 Team in the US Academy Structure, as well as still working in England.
Swartz graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a history degree, and completed his MBA at Thomas College in 1986.
Staff
Our staff have been selected based on their intensity, dedication,
and knowledge of the game. Each brings his/her own experiences and
expertise that will enhance the camper experience.
Our counselors are among the finest collegiate players in New England. They have been selected on the basis of their skill and ability to work with young players.
Our staff is always available to work on individual skills. The goal of the staff is to make each player's experience fun and rewarding.
