SALEM, MA – Salem State (5-7, 1-6 LEC) edged Saint Joseph's (8-3, 6-0 NAC), 1-0, with a 69th-minute goal in a non-conference field hockey contest on Wednesday evening.

Nicole Roy (Melrose, Mass.) scored the game-winner with 28.8 seconds remaining in regulation to bring the Monks' five-game winning streak to an end. St. Joe's had not suffered a setback since falling to University of Southern Maine by the same 1-0 margin on September 22nd.

Roy netted the clincher after collecting a loose ball during a scramble in front of the SJC cage. Nicole Bisbee (Templeton, Mass.) was credited with an assist on the play. The score was the only shot recorded by the hosts during the entire second half.

The Monks controlled play for the majority of the contest and held sizeable advantages in both shots (14-5) and corners (12-1) in the losing effort. Salem State goalie Michaela Boyer (South Hadley, Mass.) was outstanding in goal with 10 saves between the pipes.

Netminder Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) registered four saves for Saint Joseph's.

With the result, St. Joe's falls to 2-1 in the history of the series with Salem State. All three meetings have been decided by one goal.

Both teams resume action this Saturday when the Monks play at Lasell College in a 1:00 PM start and the Vikings play host to Plymouth State College at 12:00 PM.
