Monks' Home Winning Streak Snapped by Southern Maine
STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (7-2, 3-0 NAC) lost at home for
the first time in over two years as Southern Maine (8-4, 5-1 LEC)
defeated the Monks, 3-0, in a non-conference field hockey match on
Thursday afternoon. St. Joe's carried a 19-game winning streak at
Westerlea Way Field going into the contest, but three goals off the
stick of Caitlin Albert '10 (Scarborough, ME) pushed the Huskies,
who ironically were the last team to top SJC at home (2-1,
10/4/07), past the Royal Blue.
Albert started the scoring at the 5:46 mark off an India Lowe '10
(Gloucester, MA) pass to put the visitors up 1-0. The Albert-Lowe
duo repeated the feat 13 minutes later and the Huskies took a
two-goal lead into the intermission.
Lowe capped the game scoring with a penalty stroke goal over
Meaghan Johnson's '12 (Portland,
ME/Cheverus) blocker just 1:53 into the second stanza.
Allison Hill '10 (Cape Elizabeth, ME) and Rachel Lolley '11
(Gorham, ME) split time in goal for Southern Maine and made three
and two saves, respectively. Kailey Bubier '13 (Auburn, ME) steered
four shots on net in the triumph.
Johnson recorded five stops in goal for the Monks
and Kim Glynn '10 (Danvers, MA)
chipped in with a pair of defensive saves in the loss.
Sarah Bartell '12 (Exeter, NH)
recorded two shots on net for Saint Joseph's.
With the victory, Southern Maine has now defeated Saint Joseph's
in all 14 meetings between the teams.
St. Joe's will travel to Nashua, NH on Saturday to take on Rivier
College in a conference contest scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM.
Southern Maine will host LEC rival Keene State on Saturday at 1:30
PM.
