Saint Joseph's College 2008 Athletic Awards

2008 Female Athlete of the Year:
Senior Jillian Leger; Soccer
Senior Jillian Leger (Westminster, MA/Oakmont Regional HS) was named as a 2007 GNAC First Team All Conference defender, received GNAC All-Tournament honors, named to the D3Kicks.com All-New England Region Second Team and was nominated to the NCAA D III All-New England Region Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. In addition, Leger was the recipient of the Saint Joseph's College team MVP award following the conclusion of the 2007 season. As a junior Leger earned nominations to the All-Independent Women's Soccer First Team and the D3 Kicks All-New England Second Team and was named to the All-Independent Women's Soccer team her sophomore year. Leger has been a four-year starting Defender and two-year Captain for the women's soccer team and during her time St. Joe's has amassed a 50-24-4 (.676) record. The senior business management major carries a cumulative GPA of 3.86 and will graduate Magna cum laude.
 
2008 Male Athlete of the Year:
Senior Luke Enman; Baseball
Senior Luke Enman (Milan, NH/Berlin HS) was named as the 2008 GNAC Player of the Year and to the 2008 GNAC All-Conference First and All-Tournament Teams. The senior slugger currently leads the Monks in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, runs, RBI's, and stolen bases. After the 2007 season Enman was named as the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and the NAC Tournament Most Valuable Player. He was also listed on the NAC All-Conference First Team, D3Baseball.com All-American Second Team, ECAC DIII All-New England Second Team and the NEIBA First Team. Following his sophomore season Luke was named to the 2006 North Atlantic Conference First Team and was listed on the Second Team after his freshman year. Enman will unquestionably go down as one of the best players in Monks baseball history. The Monks have a 122-48-1 (.718) record in Enman's four years.
 
2008 Female Student Athlete of the Year:
Sophomore Julia Ostrowski; Field Hockey
Sophomore Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY/Guilderland Central HS), a Finance Major, is carrying a cumulative 3.92 GPA and was named to the 2007 ZAG/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Squad. She led the St. Joe's field hockey team with 20 points this season and was named to the 2007 Longstreth/NFHCA All-New England West Region Second Team. She was also given the team's Coach's Award. The After just two years, Ostrowski holds the St. Joe's record for career assists with 17 and is currently ranked as the fifth scorer all-time with 41 points.
 
2008 Male Student Athlete of the Year:
Junior Ryan Prescott; Cross Country/Lacrosse
Junior Ryan Prescott (Pittsfield, NH/Souhegan HS), a Physical Education Teacher Preparation Major and Biology Minor, holds a cumulative GPA of 3.87 and has been selected to attend the 2008 National Student-Athlete Development Conference hosted by the NCAA. Ryan was recently inducted into the Beta Omicron Chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma National Scholastic Honor Society Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He was named the GNAC Runner of the Year after winning the conference championship 8K race with a time of 28:01 and was awarded the GNAC Runner of the Week honor four times during the season. Ryan was also a starter for the first-year men's lacrosse program. In addition, he was a member of the club hockey program and has spearheaded the Ultimate Frisbee sessions on campus with great success.
 
2008 Female Newcomer of the Year Award:
Freshman Lindsay D'Ascanio; Swimming
Freshman Lindsay D'Ascanio (Kennebunk, ME) was named the GNAC Swimming Rookie of the Year and posted an impressive rookie campaign with seventeen individual first place finishes and nine relay top finishes. D'Ascanio won both of her individual events at the GNAC Championships and set a meet record in the 50-meter butterfly event. For her efforts, D'Ascanio was recognized as the GNAC Rookie Swimmer of the Week five times during the 2007-08 season. The first-year nursing major posted a 3.68 GPA in her first semester.
 
2008 Male Newcomer of the Year Award:
Freshman Chris Davis; Basketball
Freshman Chris Davis finished the season averaging 9.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots per game. He shot 51.8% (102-197) from the floor, good for second on the team, and was named to the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association All-Rookie Team. Davis tallied two double-doubles during the year and scored a season-high 25 points in an 84-71 win over GNAC rival Suffolk University on February 4th. The rookie reached double-digit point totals 12 times during the year.
 
2008 Sports Medicine Fighting Heart Award:
Senior Steven Stout; Baseball/Golf
Steve Stout (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester HS) is a 4th year pitcher that has overcome much adversity to continue his career. Stout has battled with a structural problem in his feet causing difficulty with everyday tasks such as running and conditioning with his teammates. Steve's arches are flat which in turn gives him problems in his ankles, knees, and lower back. After his freshman and sophomore seasons he held an 8-2 record, but his 2007 season was finished when he was he was involved in an automobile accident. The accident resulted in many serious injuries which included a dislocated right shoulder, a partially dislocated left shoulder, a broken right humerus in three spots and a concussion. As a result of this they found that the labrum in his throwing shoulder was also torn which resulted in reconstructive surgery. Steve has put everything behind him, overcome adversity and through May 6th, 2008 has pitched 15 innings with an ERA of 3.00, 8 strikeouts and one win.
 
2008 Neile Nelson Award:
Junior Ryan Prescott; Cross Country/Lacrosse
Presented to the student-athlete who has set an example by displaying a high level of commitment to team while performing a leadership role within the Saint Joseph 's College campus community. Ryan Prescott epitomizes these qualities as he serves the campus in a number of capacities, including Vice-President of the Ultimate frisbee club, tutor for Anatomy and Physiology and Biology, and head supervisor for the rockwall in the Alfond Center. Ryan has participated in the Spring Break Workfest for the Christian Appalachian Project twice and also has taken part in fundraising for Belarusian orphans. The two-sport standout has been nominated for the Spirit of Mercy Award and as an Ambassador for Saint Joseph's College will be attending the 2008 National Student-Athlete Development Conference sponsored by the NCAA in May. Ryan has been on the Dean's List 3 years in a row and carries a cumulative 3.87 GPA
 
2008 Royal Blue Award:
David and Carol Farrell & David and Karen Gaetani
This award is presented to parent/alum/fan who displays extraordinary support of SJC athletics. This year's honors go to David and Carol Farrell, parents of senior Megan Farrell (Basketball, Softball) and David and Karen Gaetani, parents of junior Gina Gaetani (Field Hockey).

 
2008 Father John Tokaz Award:
Fred Stone
Presented to the individual who has displayed extraordinary support of and assistance to the athletic department mission and to the Saint Joseph's College student-athletes. Fred Stone has devoted over 20 years of work at Saint Josephs College. He started as the Director of Admissions and went on to fill the Director of Recreation position for several years. Fred is a member of the Hall of Fame Committee and for the last few years he has been the home game event coordinator. He roots for our teams, he cleans up after games, he announces lineups, runs the scoreboard, he will come to campus to groom the cross country trails and has cleared the pond so students could ice skate in the winter. Everything Fred does is done because he wants the students to have a good experience; he loves working with and around the students and athletes here at Saint Joseph's.
